Distribution:

Endemic to South Africa from the mouth of the Orange river through to KwaZulu-Natal. Adults inhabit inshore marine environments to 25 m depth, usually over sandy or mixed sand and rock shorelines. Juveniles have an obligatory estuarine dependent nursery phase.

Importance:

This remarkable aquatic Oxalis only grows in seasonal pools that dry up in summer. It is only very distantly related to some of the other morphologically similar aquatic species, providing a wonderful example of convergent evolution in the South African flora.
